Aiden & Ariel: The One I Want Series creation Part 2

Jet and I are taking a minute to share the creation of our new romance series. The One I Want. I want to introduce you to Hurricane Julian…a key character in Aiden & Ariel’s story.

In Part I, we introduced you to the first book in The One I Want series, which is Aiden & Ariel’s story. We mentioned how Ariel is a kick-ass woman, ex-Army Warrant Officer, combat helicopter pilot, and flies helicopter aeromedical evacuation missions out to oil rigs peppered throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

In the opening scene, Ariel prepares to fly out to a fixed platform oil rig. Two injured men need to be evacuated. And OH BY THE WAY….there’s a Category 5 monster hurricane on the way. All the oil rigs in the Gulf are under evacuation.

I like to keep things as real as possible in my stories. Not that I don’t stretch the truth here and there, or ask for a little plausible suspension of disbelief when required, but in naming what becomes a major character in Aiden & Ariel’s story, I wanted to get it right. Julian is the name of the 10th hurricane for the 2021 season.

Fun fact: Hurricanes are named by in alphabetical order. There are six lists of names for Atlantic storms for use in six subsequent years, and every seventh year the names are reused. They alternate female and male names as they go through the alphabet within each year. In addition, in odd years the A-name begins with a female name, and in even years, the A-name is male.

Sometimes a storm is so deadly that the name is taken off the list and replaced with another name “for reasons of sensitivity. The decision is made by the WMO Tropical Cyclone Committees.

For example, Andrew was taken off the list in 1992, Katrina and Rita in 2005 and Sandy in 2012.

Since 1954, 78 Atlantic tropical storm names have been retired, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Now you KNOW!

Julian is the name of the storm barreling down on them. Ariel, kickass pilot that she is, flies INTO the storm to save the wounded who are one of the few last people needing evacuation off the rig. The rest of the rig’s crew have been evacuated in advance of the storm, but two unlucky men were injured and require her services.

I love the power and fury of a hurricane. Jet and I spent six years in Okinawa where we experienced 5-13 typhoons a year, with 2-4 per year being Category 5 typhoons. (On that side of the world, hurricanes are called typhoons. I personally prefer ‘typhoon’ over ‘hurricane.’)

“On average 10.3 typhoons a year approach within 300 kilometers of the coast of Japan. Years in which 12 or more strike this area are known as years with many typhoons. Years with eight or less are known as having “few” typhoons. Most make land fall in Okinawa or south Kyushu, particularly Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures.”

Okinawa lies right in the heart of Typhoon Alley. It gets hit by an average of seven storms a year that have hurricane strength winds, sometimes up to 190 miles per hour.

During our time overseas, we had the unique experience of having the eye of a Cat-5 typhoon pass over our home. It was one of the most surreal experiences in my lifetime thus far.

As with all my writing, I try to incorporate pieces of my life. In Aiden & Ariel’s story, I wrote scenes about aeromedical evacuation and what it’s like to live through a true monster of a storm from first-person experience.

I know you’ll enjoy these tiny tidbits. They make it REAL!

Aiden & Ariel: The One I Want Series creation

Over the next few weeks, Jet and I will be sharing the creation of our new romance series. The One I Want.

Jet has always been a supporter of my writing and helps me with plot points when I pester him enough. Then one day, he pitched a new series to me. He said, “Why don’t you write a series about love at first sight? You can do a whole THING on it”…And then he pitched his vision for what would become The One I Want Series.

At first, his intention was to simply give me ideas. This man has so many ideas! But I turned it around on him and said…”Okay, a love at first sight love story, how do you see that going?”

He replied with, “Well, how about something with kickass, professional women who find their one? You always complain about romance novels where the woman is always needing to be saved. Turn that around. Write about strong, accomplished women in gender-bending careers. Women who don’t need saving. Women who can do the saving. You know…like you.”

And that’s what launched The One I Want series.

We tossed around several cool careers. Actually, we have an incredible list to pursue. The first is Ariel. She’s an ex-Army Warrant Officer and combat helicopter pilot. Medically discharged from the Army, she now flies aeromedical evacuation missions out to Oil Rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, bringing wounded oil workers back to definitive medical care on land.

Ariel is a war decorated hero. She’s badass. And, she’s not necessarily looking for love. But that’s the thing about love. It finds you when you least expect it.

Writing about Ariel led to Off-Shore drilling and research into what that life must be like. The above graphic displays all the different kinds of offshore oil rigs that currently exist. The rig Ariel’s aeromedical evacuation mission takes her too is one of the Fixed Rig platforms. One of the issues with these is that they are literally FIXED to the seafloor, and therefore can’t move out of the way of oncoming storms.

“Fixed platform: Anchored directly into the seabed, fixed-platform rigs consist of a tall, steel structure known as a “jacket” that rises up from the ocean to support a surface deck. The jacket provides the rig’s sturdy base and holds everything else out of the water, while the drilling modules and crew quarters are located on the surface deck. Fixed platforms offer stability but no mobility, and today they’re primarily used to tap moderately shallow, long-term oil deposits. They can drill about 1,500 feet below the surface, but they’re costly to build, so they usually require a large oil discovery to justify their construction.”

In addition to research into helicopters and oil rigs, a hurricane takes center stage in this story. We’ll talk more about hurricanes in our next post.

Jet & Ellie: Our Story

Jet and Ellie Masters.

That’s US.

True Love

Jet and I believe in true love. We believe you can look into the eyes of your soulmate and JUST KNOW. Many people may not believe us, but for us, we are one of the lucky few who fell in love at first sight.

I was sitting beside a swimming pool in a tiny black bikini when Jet found me. I’ll never know if it was the bikini or some other quality, but he SAW me, and jumped off the diving board to reach me. I thought he was loony, until he swam over and captivated me with his incredible blue eyes and a smile I couldn’t ignore. And DIMPLES! Let’s not forget those dimples!

Our first date, was not typical, and probably not the thing of first loves or true loves. We talked about nothing other than our very horrible, and very EX-significant others. We’d both been badly hurt and were unwilling to travel back down that road. What we didn’t know was that in talking about our past failures, we were ever so slowly falling in love with our forever. Jet swept me off my feet and I planted a smile in his heart.

It took less than three hours to fall in love.

Three months later, Jet asked me to be his forever. I said YES, unequivocally YES, without hesitation. We married a few short weeks later and have been together ever since. True love. We lived it. We believe it, and we want to bring that to you.

Jet and I are writing a THE ONE I WANT series together. It’s a collection of spicy contemporary couple’s romance stories. All are ‘tied’ together in some way. Each book is a standalone, and all come with a heaping spoonful of 3-4 flame scenes, with the pièce de résistance…a Happily Ever After.

In each book, you’ll read about a strong kickass woman. We’re talking helicopter pilots, commercial boat captains, wildlife adventure guides, a veterinarian…you get the picture. Strong, accomplished women who don’t need a man in their lives, but who can’t help stumbling across ‘THE ONE’.

Sparks will fly.

These stories are about love at first sight. They’re heartfelt and true to what Jet and I believe about love. We believe that special spark exists, and we’re bringing it to you, one story at a time.

The men in these stories are pretty amazing too! You’ll see Green Berets, Delta operatives, Air Force Para-jumpers, and more. Of course, strong women deserve strong men. Right?

I hope you’ll join us as we launch THE ONE I WANT series.

Accepting Stress Means Letting Go

I have a daily inspirational ‘thing’ I do, and today the posting was about accepting stress. I didn’t really understand what that meant, because we’re supposed to eliminate or reduce stress in our lives. I read the little inpsirational bit I was supposed to read, then realized I had done just that the other day.

What does this mean?

Accept Stress? Who wants to accept it?

Well, I think we can all agree that it’s great to prevent stress. I mean, who wants stress in their lives? Right? And when stress does arise, we all want to find ways to cope with it.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do, when we’re not able to prevent stress, or alleviate stress, is to accept stress. This is most important when stress is unavoidable.

What is unavoidable stress?

It’s a source of stress that you have no control over, meaning your actions to prevent it, alleviate it, or avoid it, aren’t possible. In these instances, fighting stress can cause more stress.

Why?

Because this isn’t something you can control, and fighting will leave you unsuccessful, prolonging and increasing the duration and severity of the stressor.

Accepting stress does not mean you’re a passive player. What it involves is being aware of why you’re stressed, being mindful, acknowledging, and understanding what it is that’s making you feel stressed. Secondly, recognizing that the stress is beyond your control. There is nothing you can do to avoid it, prevent it, or alleviate it. It’s about being honest with yourself that the situation isn’t something you can change.

Once you realize this, you can then take steps toward accepting the stress. This is an active process, which is why accepting stress is not passive.

First off, stop trying to control the uncontrollable. It’s in our nature to want to control everything in our lives, but this simply isn’t possible. Release the need to control it.

Then, LET GO.

Once you’re no longer trying to control the stressor, you can release the negative emotions you’re holding onto which are associated with the stress. Release them. Until you do, you won’t be able to truly accept the stress.

Finally, seek opportunities to learn from what happened. You might just find a silver lining, or find yourself lightened by the burden of trying to control something beyond control.

I stopped trying to control the uncontrollable because it only increased my stress when I failed to eliminate it. I had no power. This caused frustration, and frustration led to more stress.

I couldn’t prevent it.

I couldn’t avoid it.

I couldn’t alleviate it.

I accepted it wasn’t something I had the power to change.

I took stock of my situation, being mindful of what it was that was making me stressed. There was nothing I could do to change it. It was beyond my power.

So I let go.

As soon as I accepted my powerless over the source of my stress, a profound calmness swept through me. A burden lifted. I didn’t have to fight anymore. In accepting my powerlessness, I found strength.

Then, this morning I read my daily inspirational ‘thingy’ and was like WOW. Imagine that? You can accept stress!

Without struggle there is no strength.

Thoughts on writing.

I love dragons. Always have. My love began when I read the Pern Dragon Rider Series by Anne McCaffrey and her husband, Tom. I simply fell in love with the whole concept and devoured those books. I also love that she wrote them with her husband. To share something like that with the one you love is nothing short of amazing.

Jet and I are writing a series of love stories. I’m polishing up the third book and finishing the fourth. These are wonderful books which are all about love at first sight. Jet and I fell in love during our first date. We were married four months later. We believe in true love and want to share our passion with you.

I know Game of Thrones is coming…who on Earth doesn’t KNOW this, and there are dragons in Game of Thrones. If you are a dragon lover too and have not yet read the Dragon Riders of Pern, wander over to your favorite bookseller and take a look. You won’t be disappointed.

That’s a guarantee!

If you want to check out the Dragon Riders of Pern series, you can do that here.

A Dark Captive Romance that Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat!

My father gave me to a stranger in exchange for debts owed.
Abducted. Imprisoned. Enslaved.
This is my existence.
Uncompromising and relentless in getting what he wants, the man who owns me makes my temper flare, my blood boil, and my body come alive. He’s getting under my skin, making me submit to his will, and desire things I should never want.
I’m his prisoner.
I’m his slave.
But, I will be his undoing.
If he thinks to claim me, he’s in for a fight, because I am my father’s daughter, and they will both reap what they’ve sown.
At least, that is the plan.

This is a dark romantic thriller which contains scenes some may find disturbing. There is FULL consent (NO non-con: so relax, you can enjoy this!). You’ll get one sexy Alpha Male, a feisty heroine strong enough to put him through his paces, and an amazing dark storyline. Sit back. Relax. And strap in for one hell of a ride!

I bounced with excitement as I neared the thick doors of the palatial monstrosity which had been my prison for the past twenty-one years. Z was out on a business trip. I’d be in and out, then gone, and would never again have to face the darkness in my father’s eyes.
.
As long as Z and I kept our distance, me in boarding school and him with his business, life allowed me to deny the truth. I was the rich socialite daughter of the illustrious Zane Carson, multi-millionaire who collected properties and corporations for sport. I dated who I wanted. As long as I didn’t sleep with married men or had my name splashed in the tabloids, Z and I maintained a peaceful coexistence.
.
But that no longer mattered, because I vowed to be free of his overbearing ways. I had plans to pub crawl from Scotland to Germany in one long summer of debauchery with my girlfriends before hitting the books and beginning my new life. All I had to do was stuff my backpack with a couple of pairs of jeans, T-shirts, and one naughty black dress.
.
At twenty-one, I had a bachelors in Computer Science from MIT which set me free. No longer would I be a slave to Z’s money or his insufferable rules.
.
I put my weight behind the heavy, ornate door and pushed. This would be the last time I entered this house.
.
I stepped across the threshold and lurched to a stop.
.
Z stood in the middle of the sweeping foyer. His coal dark eyes bore down on me beneath thick bushy brows. Heavy shadows gathered in his stormy gaze and a scowl framed his face. Two men stood with him; two large, intimidating men.
.
Years of rejection and emotional manipulation left no love lost between me and Z. In my head, he wasn’t father or daddy. He was simply Z. I had long since whittled my father’s name down to a single letter. I hated him, only because I craved the love he denied me with the irrational need of a child. In front of others, I maintained a civil facade, however, and called him Papa. I did that now.
.
“Papa? I didn’t think you would be home.” My sandals slapped against Italian marble as I pulled up short.
.
“Raven.” His harsh, clipped tones made my heart lurch. There was no tenderness for me in his greeting.
.
Disapproval tugged at the corners of his mouth and his displeasure radiated in the flare of his nostrils and the pinch of his eyes as he surveyed my state of dress.
.
His women wore their hair in tightly wound buns or French twists. I kept mine loose because it irritated him and it hung down to my waist. But his eyes skipped over my hair, made no mention of my lack of makeup, and moved to my summer tank top and cut off shorts. That’s when his eyes widened, showing white around inky blackness.
.
“Papa…” My throat constricted and I subconsciously wrapped an arm across my chest, covering my unsupported breasts.
.
Z demanded perfection in his female companions.
Seeing his daughter in cut-off jeans, and a spaghetti tank top without a bra garnered more reaction in three seconds than I’d gotten out of him in twenty-one years.
.
“You’re dressed like a whore.” His teeth ground out a horrible sound as his jaw clenched.
.
My gaze flew to the men. Surprise fluttered in my belly that he would speak so crudely in front of company.
.
“Papa?” The word hung between us as he came at me.
.
His fingers latched around my wrist, biting into the tender flesh. My free hand pulled at him, trying to loosen his grip, but my efforts were useless against the steel band of his fingers. He yanked me toward the men.
.
“As promised.” He thrust me at the largest man. “Debt paid.”
.
An impossibly huge man pulled me from Z’s grip.
.
I turned wild eyes to Z.
.
I looked to the man who had given me life and saw the truth etched in the granite lines of his features. Comfort never came through the cold-hearted man who dominated my life. He never once touched me with love.
.
The set of his jaw confirmed the truth. I couldn’t believe what was happening, but the men lent a certain degree of reality to the situation.
.
The man who took me from Z, wrapped an arm around my waist as I kicked out trying to get free. It was a useless gesture. My efforts to free myself were laughable, but then I wasn’t thinking rationally. My mind reeled with my father’s words. What did he mean by debt paid?
.
The man pressed his lips to my ear and whispered. “You belong to another now.”

Drama Llamas and Writing

It’s too easy to let the drama of the INDIE publishing world consume you (me) as a writer. TOO EASY.

With all the comments about stuffers, trademarks, and plagerism, these are my thoughts.

I’ve pulled back from social media. You’ve probably noticed. I’m writing what I want to write and ignoring everything going on around me. Writing is an escape for me. I used to read to escape. Now, I write the stories I want to read. I write about strong women who find the love of their lifetimes.

I’m having the best time ever writing my new series with Jet (he’s the hubs in case you didn’t know). Just having him involved in my passion is GOLD to me. Whether any of them will ever published is irrelevant. I love writing them.

Don’t worry!!! They will be published…they’re freakin’ great books.

😍

But, like the rest of my writing, they’re a departure from what I’ve done before. They’re not heavy BDSM, although that is fun to write. They’re not rockstars. What are they? They’re sweet, somewhat steamy, love at first sight, romances with a bit of suspense.

I believe in love at first sight. Jet and I met and married in less than four months and after our very first date, we knew we’d be together forever. And we’re still having the best time of our lives together.

😍

Every book I write is about a strong woman. In this series (which I’m pointedly not telling you the name of yet…we’ll get there. Trust me!) …we have hurricanes to survive, mountain rescues to achieve, sunken treasure to discover and even modern day pirates to deal with. The women do the saving and rescuing and all the rest. These are strong, resilient women, role models for all the little girls out there who can be whatever they want to be. Each of these women will accomplish much with their fabulous men by their side. But, if the men weren’t there, these women would still kick major ass. I believe in the strength of women.

😍

Back to Drama Llamas (I bet you thought I forgot!)

I get burned out with social media. Everything I do is after the 80hr work week which pays the bills. I’m a solo act. I write, advertise, do graphic design. I do it all. ALONE. It’s neverending, and sometimes I need to step back and reevaluate WHAT I’m doing and WHY.

I’m writing the stories I love to read, because if I don’t write them no-one will. That’s what I’m focusing on.
