Day 8 A book you love and one you didn’t.
A BOOK I LOVED…
There isn’t one book, but several that I love. My roots of reading are in Science Fiction, then expanded to Fantasy. Romance came at a much later age. I cut my teeth on Heinlein, Asimov and Pohl. ALL of their books are my favorite, because they took me beyond the realms of Earth and gave me the belief mankind was a true masterpiece of greatness. I have always wanted to travel the stars. Tolkien of course is a favorite. I read Lord of the Rings in a day, literally a book I did not put down. I even carried it to bathroom breaks and into the kitchen to make a drink to fill my empty bladder back up. I don’t think I actually ate anything that day. Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series, the first three books in particular. Loved! Loved! Loved! reading all those stories, some of the few books I’ve actually re-read.
A BOOK I DIDN’T LIKE…
I’ve never read Moby Dick. Nope. When I was in high school, I lived in Hawaii, and much of our reading reflected the cultures of the Hawaiian Islands, which means Japan and China.
I read the MONKEY KING, better known to the Chinese as Xi You Ji (Journey to the West), it’s a renowned classical Chinese novel dating back 400 years. It’s a CLASSIC, and thus why it was a reading assignment for 9th grade English.
Monkey King is based upon the true story of a famous Chinese monk, Xuan Zang, who lived during the Tang Dynasty (602-664). After a decade of trials and tribulations he arrives in India, the birthplace of Buddhism where he is searching for TRUE Buddhist holy books. When he returned he translated the Sutras into Chinese, thereby contributing to the development of Buddhism in China
Monkey King is an allegorical rendition of this journey. It is full of fables, fairy tales, legends, superstitions, popular beliefs, monster stores, and a mix of Taoist, Buddhist, and other Chinese religions. The Monkey King is depicted as a rebellious spirit set against the untouchable feudal rulers.
Think of it as Aesop’s Fables on CRACK!!!
The Monkey King was born out of a rock, fertilized by the grace of Heaven and Earth. He learned all the magic tricks from an immortal Taoist master, and can transform into 72 different images, or sneak into an enemy’s body to fight from the inside out. He uses clouds to travel and can cover 108,000 miles in a single somersault.
I spent my first year of high school, writing ESSAYS about this 100 chapter book. It was a beast. I hated reading it. I hated having to write about the hidden messages inside of it. I hated that entire year of 9th grade English!
BUT NOW I’M WRITING A BOOK, AND IT’S COMING SOON, MARCH 15TH! AND IF YOU LOVE A BIT OF DARK ROMANCE, YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY NOVEL…CHANGING ROLES.
